Definition of Modeling

Solid Modeling

Solids are created from primitives or curves where their shape is modified by adding or subtracting material in the form of other solids or modification features.

In the example below, the shape of object 3 is defined by subtracting the volume of the smaller unit from the larger unit.

In the example below, the shape of object 2 is produced by extruding the curves shown in object 1.

Using Extrude to create a solid of a profile (curves)

Both examples above are solid objects and their shape can only be modified by changing the volume of the solid, either by adding or removing material from the primitive.

Surface Modeling

Surface Modeling refers to the functional skin of an object whereby a skin is stretched over the surface of an object connecting the edges, faces and vertices. The surface can have continuous curvature with the ability to exert flexible design control over the surfaces, edges and vertices.

In the example below left, the structural surface lines are shown connecting the faces, edges and vertices.

By using the Select Deep, a single face can be selected and design control can be exerted over the selected surface only.

Mesh Modeling

Mesh Modeling covers the object in a polygonal cage, subdividing the surface into quad polygonal segments suitable for sub-divisional modeling. The polygonal cage can be subdivided into a tighter or looser matrix to exert infinite modeling control over the mesh surface.

In the example below, a Mesh Block of 50x50x50 is drawn with an equal distribution of polygonal mesh segments of 4.

By using the Select Deep tool to select the faces shown in object 2 and using the gripper handle to move these faces forward, the result shown in object 3 is produced. Note how associated faces, edges and vertices maintain their relationship to the moved faces.
