Modify | Solid Features | Edge Treatments

These edge treatments apply a groove, lip or flange to a Solid Primitive, adding or removing material to create the edge feature.

The features of the lip, groove and flange are incorporated into the Solid Primitive but the features of the original primitive and the edge treatment can be modified individually.

The structural relationship between the edge treatment and the primitive is maintained when either the feature is updated.

Groove

Modify | Solid Features | Edge Treatments | Groove

This edge treatment removes material below a selected edge by inputting a height, width and draft angle.

In the illustrations below, a groove is added to the face of the block shown by point 1.

Worked Example

Start a new drawing.

Right click in the editor and set the view to Isometric.

Draw a Block PrimitiveDraw | Solid Primitives | Block Primitive to the following dimensions :

length = 50

width = 40

height = 20

Select Solid Feature | Edge Treatments | Groove then input a height of 5, a width of 2 and an angle of 0 into the edit fields.

Select the face of the block, shown below left as point 1.

At the prompt pick edge along groove removed material, select the edge shown below as point 2.

The dimensions of the Block and Groove are updated in the Edit fields or in the Inspector | Attribute Data window.

In the example below, the length of the Block is updated by double-clicking on the solid shown by the arrow and updating the value in the Inspector.

Lip

This edge treatment adds material above a selected face by inputting the height, width and draft (taper) angle.

In the illustrations below, a lip is added to the top face of the block.

Worked Example

Start a new drawing.

Right click in the editor and set the view to Isometric.

Draw a Block PrimitiveDraw | Solid Primitives | Block Primitive to the following dimensions :

length = 50

width = 40

height = 20

Create an interior wall thickness of 2 by shelling out the block, removing the top face of the block. Select Modify | Solid Features | Shell Feature and input an offset of 2 into the edit fields, then select the Block. Select the top face to remove.

Select Solid Feature | Edge Treatments | Lip then input a height of 5, a width of 2 and an angle of 0.

Select the top face of the block, shown below left as point 1.

At the prompt pick edge along lip removed material, select the edge shown below as point 2.

The result is shown below.

Although additional material has been added in the form of the lip and the 2 features now combined into a single solid, the data attributes of the block and the lip can be updated. For example, to update the lip, left click onto the lip feature and update the information in the data attributes window, shown below.

In the example below, the height and the draft angle have been updated.

The relationship between the lip and the block is maintained when the block data is updated.

In the example below, the data attributes of the block are updated and the lip maintains a structural relationship to the block.

Flange

Modify | Solid Features | Edge Treatments | Lip

This edge treatment tool creates an offset from a face by inputting the thickness and offset value.

In the illustration below are 2 examples of adding a flange. Item 1 is a hollow cylinder with a flange offset of 5 and thickness of 10. The top face is offset to create the flange.

Item 2 is a solid cylinder with a flange offset of 10 and a thickness of 5. The bottom face is offset to create the flange.

The structural relationship between the flange edge treatment and the primitive is maintained when either the feature is updated.

Worked Example

This example will place a flange on the top of a cylinder.

Start a new drawing.

Right click in the editor and set the view to Isometric.

Draw a Cylinder PrimitiveDraw | Solid Primitives | Block Primitive to the following dimensions :

height = 50

diameter = 25

Select Solid Feature | Edge Treatments | Flange then input an offset of 5 and a thickness of 10.

Select the top face of the block, shown below left as point 1.

At the prompt pick edge in direction to add flange, select the edge shown below as point 2.
