Drawing the Slots

In this Task

  • The region for the first slot will be created using concentric circles and angled lines.
  • This region will be duplicated using the Polar Duplicate tool.
  • The slots will then be extruded to form units which can be subtracted from the wheel.

Before you Start

  • Set the visual display mode of Part 3 to Transparency. Position the cursor over the 3D object, right click and select Transparency.
  • Important : Workplane snap is enabled. Use Window > Snaps to do this.

Take Note

  • Workplanes can be moved in the same manner as a drawing object. The origin of the Workplane is at the intersection of the XYZ axes.

Moving the Workplane Origin

Turn the view to Top view, then view the model in Transparency display mode. Right click over the part and select Transparency.

From the WorkPlane menu, select Show Workplane.

Drag the Workplane to relocate its origin to midpoint of the original sketch profile, shown below.

Drawing the Slots

Make sure the Workplane snap is enabled. Use Windows > Snaps to do this.

Turn the view to Left Side Reduce the zoom magnification slightly, then insert 2 concentric circles onto the center of the object with diameters of 62 and 52, shown below.

Alignment Angle

Make sure an alignment angle of 30° is enabled in Preferences > Snap. This was discussed and demonstrated in greater detail in [Session 2](2D Session 02_03.htm#Alignmen).

Start a Single Line from the center of the circles, allowing the LogiCursor to track to 30°, shown below. Allow the line to extend beyond the newly created concentric circles.

Repeat this for the opposite angle so that a corresponding line at -30° extends beyond the circles, shown below. In the illustration below, the regions are highlighted for illustrative clarity only.

Trim

Modify | Trim | Trim
The Trim tool trims lines, arcs of circles to a defined boundary edge.
The keyboard SHIFT key is used to select multiple objects and can be used to add or remove objects to the selection.

Select the Trim tool from the toolbar of use Modify | Trim | Trim.

Use the Trim tool so that only the regions shown shaded above remain from the concentric circles and the angled lines.

Extrude Solid (midplane)

Draw | Solid from Curves | Extrude Solid
This extrusion tool sweeps a 2D profile in a plane perpendicular to the Workplane to create a 3D object.
A bi-directional extrusion can be created which creates an equidistant above and below Workplane extrusion.
Closed profiles only can be extruded.
When closed objects within the profile are selected as part of the profile, the volume of the extruded inner objects will be subtracted from the primary solid.

Set the view to Left side, then select the Extrude Solid tool. TAB to the Distance field and input 13.  Make sure the option is set to Midplane. Select the newly drawn slot profile, taking care to select the correct part.

The result when viewed from a Top and Isometric view is shown below.

Polar Duplicate

Modify | Transform | Polar Duplicate
This duplication tool creates copies of an object or objects in a circular pattern around a common center point.

In [Session 3](2D Session 03_05.htm#Polar), the Polar Duplicate tool was used to array 2D objects to create a radial pattern.

3D objects can be arrayed using the Polar Duplicate tool in an identical manner to that used when arraying 2D objects.

In this Task, the newly created slot will be arrayed using the Polar Duplicate tool. Four slots in total will be created.

Turn the view to Front, then select the new part, shown below. In the example below, a left-to-right pick window is used.

Select Polar Duplicate from the toolbar or use Modify > Transform > Polar Duplicate

Position the cursor in the center of the wheel, then input the information shown in the Polar Duplicate dialog box below.

Subtract Solid

Modify | Solid Booleans | Subtract Solid
This 3D Boolean function creates a new solid object by subtracting the volume of a secondary object from an intersecting primary solid.

The volume of the arrayed slots will be removed from the wheel. The wheel is referred to as the primary solid; the object from which the slots will be subtracted.

Select the Subtract Solid tool from the toolbar or use Modify > Solid Booleans > Subtract Solid

Select the wheel first, then the first slot. Repeat this until the volumes of the slots have been removed from the wheel. The result is shown below.
