In this Task

  • The sketch will be prepared for 3D model creation.
  • A new layer will be created specifically for the model.
  • Lines and annotations not critical to the creation of the 3D model will be moved to the Dimension layer which will be switched off.
  • The inner profile of the sketch will be extruded to a height of 25.
  • The outer profile will be extruded to a height of 20.
  • Two separate parts will be created.

Before you Start

Take Note

  • Layer control is used to create a distinction between the sketch and the model.

Open the drawing which was saved as Session 2 Sketch or use the [sample drawing](https://www.tricad.co.za/2020-1/SharkCAD/Content/Resources/Drawings/Session 3 Sketch%26Model.sfx) for this session.

Save this drawing as Session 2 Model using File > Save As.

Creating a New Layer

Window > Concept Explorer

Note : This step is not necessary if you are using the sample drawing for this Session.

A new layer will be created in order to distinguish the sketch geometry and solid model. Use Window > Concept Explorer to create a new layer called Model, shown below.

Activate this layer as the current layer, shown below, then switch of the dimension layer, shown below.

Lines which are not essential to the production of the model should either be deleted or moved to an invisible layer. In this example, the center lines and angled lines will be moved to the Dimension layer.

Select all lines and arcs which are not critical to the production of the 3D model, similar to those shown selected below, then double click onto the Dimension layer in the Concept Explorer, shown below.

To conceal objects on this layer during the production of the model, activate as current the Model layer and switch off the Dimension layer. The result is shown below.

Extrude Solid

Modify | Draw | Solid from Curves | Extrude Solid

Select the Extrude****Solid tool from the toolbar or use Modify > Draw > Solid from Curves > Extrude Solid. Make sure the option is set to Distance.

From the options menu, select Distance, then TAB to the distance field and input 20. The values should be similar to the illustration below.

Hold down the SHIFT key and select the objects shown in red below. In this example, a horizontal and vertical pick window was used. For more information, refer to the Video for this task.

Isometric View

View > Isometric
Right click > View > Isometric

Right click in the editor and select View > Isometric to view the model. The result should be similar to the illustration below.

In the illustration below, the Transparency option has been activated. Position the cursor over the model, right click and activate Transparency.

With the Extrude****Solid tool still active, TAB to the Distance field and input a new Distance value of 15, making sure the dZ value is also set to 15.

Create a pick window around all the objects, shown below.

Component Color

When the layer for the Model was created, the color override option was not selected. When the color box of the layer is shown in non-override mode, shown below, the color of the component can be changed infinitely in the editor. When a color is selected, this represents an override and only the selected color will be used for this part.

When the layer color override is off, shown above for layer Model, the component color drawn on that layer can be changed at any time. This is useful when there are multiple components or sub-assemblies as it provides an easy contrast between parts.

Position the cursor over either part, then right click and select Color. Select different colors for the components, similar to the illustration below.

Dynamic Rotate

View | Rotate View

This option rotates the view of the model without rotating the physical part. To return to a standard view, right click and select the required view.

Use the Dynamic****Rotate option to turn the view of the parts. Right click in the editor and select Dynamic****Rotate. When done, right click again and select View > Isometric.
