Dimensions & Center Lines

Dimensions & Center Lines

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 1 views

In this Task

  • The overall length of the center lines will be adjusted.
  • A center line will be drawn at the included angle of the top circles.
  • Dimensions and Center Marks will be added.

Associated Tasks

  • Extend using Dynamic Extend option.

Before you Start

  • Snap modes are enabled.

Take Note

  • This Session is optional as the 2D sketch geometry is complete.

Extend

Modify | Trim | Extend | [Extend Dynamically]
This modification tool allows a line or arc to be shortened or extended in the same plane by dragging the pointing device to a suitable position.
A specific extension distance can be provided by selecting the Extend to Distance option.

Select the Extend tool from the toolbar or use Modify > Trim > Extend. From the options menu, select Extend Dynamically > Linear. These tools are found in the menu bar after the tool has been selected.

Using your own specific requirement, shorten or lengthen all lines in the drawing, including the angled line, similar to the illustration below.

Dynamically lengthening the angled line

The result is shown below.

Midpoint Line

Draw | Line | Midpoint Line
This line tool draws a line equidistantly about its midpoint.
The Midpoint Line can be drawn to a specific length and angle.

In this task, a new line will be drawn to indicate the associated center line of the top right circles, shown below.

New associated center line

The angled line is drawn at an angle of 51°, therefore the new line will be drawn from the center of the circle at an angle of either 141° or 309°

In this example, the line will be drawn to an approximate length of 95 at an angle of 141.

Select the Midpoint Line from the toolbar or use Draw > Line > Midpoint Line.

Indicate the center of the circle, shown below.

Drawing a midpoint line from the center

Drag the line to the upper left quadrant of the circle, then TAB to the edit fields and input 95 into the Length field and 141 into the angle field. The result is shown below.

Dimensions & Center Marks

Draw | Dimension
Annotation detail such as dimensions and center marks can be added to the sketch if necessary.
Annotation is usually added to the Dimension layer, a default layer when starting a new drawing from a template.

Depending on your preferences and whether your intention is to produce only the 2D sketch, a separate layer can be created for center lines and the resident lines can be moved to that layer.

If your intention is to produce the 3D model from this sketch (this is done in the next task), then center lines and additional annotation will be removed.

For reference purposes, it is recommended that important dimensions are inserted onto the sketch, similar to the illustration below.
