Creating the Insets

Estimated reading: 2 minutes 1 views

In this Task

  • The original sketch geometry will be used to create two new parts.
  • These parts will be extruded together to form a single unit which will be added to the primary solid.

Associated Tasks

  • Extrude Solid, Add Solid.

Before you Start

  • The view is set to Isometric.
  • Extrude option is set to Midplane.

Take Note

  • The layer on which the original sketch geometry was created is ‘Layer1’
  • Views shown below have been rotated for illustrative clarity.

Creating the Insets

Sketch geometry which was used to build the 3D model can have multiple purposes. For example, segments of the original sketch can be used to create new parts for the model.

In this task, two insets will be created from the sketch objects shown shaded below.

Regions which will be extruded by 8

Right click in the editor and select Show All > Show Objects.

Turn the view to Isometric, then right click over each part in turn and select Hide. This allows the sketch objects to be exclusively displayed, making the profiles more accessible.

Extrude Solid

Modify | Draw | Solid from Curves | Extrude Solid
This extrusion tool sweeps a 2D profile in a plane perpendicular to the WorkPlane to create a 3D object.
A bi-directional extrusion can be created which creates an equidistant above and below WorkPlane extrusion.
Closed profiles only can be extruded.
When closed objects within the profile are selected as part of the profile, the volume of the extruded inner objects will be subtracted from the primary solid.

Hold down the SHIFT key, the select the first region using a left-to-right pick window, shown below left. Keep the SHIFT key down, then use a pick window to select the second region, below right.

Select the Extrude Solid tool, then input a distance of 8, making sure the midplane option is activated. The result is shown below.

Right click in the editor and select Show All > Objects

Add Solid

Modify | Solid Booleans | Add Solid
This 3D boolean function combines the volume of 2 intersecting or adjoining 3D solids or surfaces.

Use the Add Solid boolean function to combine the volumes of the newly extruded parts and the main unit so that the result is similar to the illustration below.
